Westport has many attractions for the outdoor enthusiast from walking, cycling and for the very enthusiastic – adventure racing, i.e. Gaelforce, Sea to Summit to name but two.

For the more relaxed visitor Elderberry is within two hundred metres from the access to The Greenway, Ireland’s longest walking and cycling route of 42 kms. The Greenway runs on the route of the old Achill Railway line taking you through wild and wonderful open countryside. The views of Croagh Patrick, Clew Bay and the Nephin Mountains have to be seen to be appreciated. Here in the West of Ireland the light and colour is constantly changing from the blues of the sky and sea to the greens and browns of the land and the mountains.

The Greenway takes you through Newport with it’s pleasant shops and pubs, then on to Mulranny where one can enjoy lunch or a snack in The Mulranny Park Hotel. The Greenway continues on to Achill Sound,
skirting the shores of Blacksod Bay.

Ireland’s Holy mountain, Croagh Patrick dominates the town of Westport. This mountain is climbed as a place of pilgrimage and is a very pleasant hill walk all year round. Enjoy the physical challenge of climbing in the footsteps of history and meet pilgrims and tourists from all over the world and enjoy the spectacular views of Clew Bay. Clare Island is only one of the 365 islands reputed in Clew Bay.

Grainne Uaile Ireland’s pirate Queen has her headquarters on Clare Island. This island can be visited by ferry from Roonagh Point on a daily basis. Roonagh is situated approximately half hour drive from Westport. The ferry to Inisturk is also taken from Roonagh.

Angling boats can be hired on a daily or evening basis, skipper included at Westport Quay during season for a fishing trip on Clew Bay.

For the young and not so young Westport has a state of the art skate park situated on The Greenway five minutes walking from the town centre. There is also a basketball court, five aside Astroturf pitch on the same site. There is also a children’s playground in the town centre at The Leisure Centre Park. The leisure centre offers a 25m swimming pool, sauna, juzucci, stream room, plunge pool and fully equipped gym. This site also has a multiplex cinema.

To complete your evening Westport has many restaurants to suit every price range, some of been highly acclaimed.
